Difficult Passage for Calvinists
This is a difficult passage for calvinists. It is particularly difficult for the sonship flavor of which I have become over the last couple of years. One key to interpreting this passage is to remember that we must not forget all of scripture when we interpret a particular scripture. Many errors have been born by forgetting about the whole of scripture.
The attonement is so clearly taught, that cannot accept an interpretation that would say that Christ would allow someone to be "cut off" whose sins had been paid for by the blood of Christ.
My second observation is that the command that Christ gives in this context is, "Love one another as I have loved you." It ironic that those who often would use this passage to teach against calvinism can be some of the most judgmental, legalistic christians.
Indeed, calvinists themselves would do well to concentrate on this command rather than finding a compatible interpretation.
